The Challenges of Being Multi-talented

Multi-potentiality or multi-talentedness is a largely unexplored aspect of giftedness, especially in terms of developing strategies for lifetime fulfillment. While it’s not uncommon for parents to encourage a wide array of interests and abilities in their multi-potentialed children, for the ones who are truly, persistently multi-talented, there are no clear options for turning childhood exploration into a viable career path....

Embracing The Unknown

"I have always felt that "I should'a known."

I was told as a child, "You should know better... you're the oldest." I somehow waited for the day when my "oldest" position would endow me with the knowledge that everyone expected of me. But until then, I acted a role... as if I did "know". I faked it all of my life. I never knew who I was or what I was supposed to do, but I always acted "as if" I knew...

Enhancing Personal Expression

"I have always felt that "I should'a known."

Even if you have doubts about the extent of your giftedness, you will really bring your talents to life if you will embrace your drive to become, serve, create, achieve, and contribute. The purpose of self-recognition is not to fuel egotism or elitism, but to align with a more powerful, creative part of you that will let your heart, your knowledge, your talent loose on the world...

Light vs. DarkIs it Ego or Free Awareness?

There is often some confusion in class about how to recognize our current state, so let's review some of the things to look for that help us distinguish what is Ego and and what is free Awareness -- that is, experiences of presence and Love. Here are a few tips on recognizing the wily Ego and its patterns...

The Language of Awareness Work

Many people have asked me about my choice of language in developing the awareness work. I have chosen specific words to be technical terms for the subjects taken up in each level of exploration. These terms evoke a direct recognition and felt-sense of the topics under discussion and ask you to respond by describing what things feel like to you...

Misdiagnosis Of The Gifted

Gifted individuals face many challenges. One of them may be in getting correctly identified by psychotherapists and others as gifted.

It's well known among re searchers of the gifted, talented and creative that these individuals exhibit greater intensity and increased levels of emotional, imaginational, intellectual, sensual and psychomotor excitability and that this is a normal pattern of development...

InvisibleMyths About Giftedness

There are many myths about the gifted that are held in the mainstream culture. They permeate conventional parenting and our educational system, including private education.  These misconceptions and attitudes drift along in the mainstream mindset unnoticed, except perhaps by gifted people trying to accomplish something meaningful in their lives when they run up against them...

Ear HornsPaying Attention

Paying close attention all the time is the most important element in achieving a sustainable free state of awareness. Being aware only when we are grabbed by the throat when our most painful patterns are up is really insufficient for Personal and Transpersonal Journey work. But how can we best cultivate this all important skill? ...

Perils Of Oversocialization

It is not only our personal ego patterns that bedevil us, that trap our thinking and keep our lives small, it is the larger ego pattern of the culture around us. It is comprised of family, friends, the media, social values, morality and the standards by which a “good” or “successful” person are judged. Even more derailing are the internal “shoulds and obligations” that carry out the edicts of this internalized arbiter of our daily behavior.

Oversocialization is annoying to many people, but it is a death trap for the gifted...

Recognizing The Now

It is often difficult to see what Now is about unless something dramatic catches our attention. This is an open invitation for the voice of Ego to speak up and make itself useful once again by deciding for us what we should or shouldn't be doing right now. Let's look at some ways to improve and stabilize our free Awareness.

The first step is to fully relax into a state of presence, and take in all you see, hear, smell, touch and feel...

Seven Years of Journey Work

For the first six months of 1993, I acted as "secretary to Awareness" and the Personal Journey course was written. The inspiration came from my long association with Carlton Salter, who was an avid reader of Krishnamurti's writings, and my own interest in adapting aspects of Buddhist metaphysics and Western psychotherapy into a precisely sequenced lesson plan that was fresh, accessible and profound. When we sat down with our first group of students in June of that year, we were all admittedly clueless as to what this

course actually was. Throughout the last seven years and hundreds of students later, much has been discovered about this course work. It came out of paying attention while I was teaching it and by editing it annually to tighten it up and incorporating feedback from the students--what has confused them and what has resonated. Here's what has been discovered...

Toward Ending Global Separation

Traditionally, we have left our deepest spiritual and societal healing in the hands of those with the highest moral authority or those who have the charisma, courage and vision to galvanize people into movements that change the world. We have been inspired by these individuals from afar while we went about our egocentric pursuits. The recent deaths of Princess Diana and Mother Teresa have given us a moment in history to realize once again the magnitude of the loss of such individuals...

What is Awareness and How Can it Optimize the Gifted?

The philosophy of my life’s work has been grounded in the belief that optimizing the human potential of the gifted would be the greatest contribution I could make to the world.  Over many years of counseling and teaching gifted adults, I have observed a strong connection between giftedness and spirituality, that is, an inner searching for meaning and connectedness with something deeper.  This observation led me to undertake two endeavors over the course of my career...
