"Giftedness these days in the research community is being understood more as an inner experience or process than external products like symphonies and films and dance companies and things of that order. And the research community is far more interested now in studying the nature of that inner process, and expanding the scope of it to go beyond just high intelligence, which we know is a component of giftedness, to include other qualities like sensitivity, perfectionism; a quality called entelechy, which is associated with being a visionary, having a personal vision, and being able to actualize that vision from within - rather than needing other people externally to realize it...

Q: David, you've been teaching the Personal Journey course now for close to a year. How is teaching the work different from being a student in the course?

A: Well, as a teacher I need to be both more generative and more receptive. When you're a student, the work is to open yourself up, to be receptive, both to the material -- the teaching -- and to your own experience, so you can look inside yourself in response to the material and receive your own answers.

As a teacher, there's a need to generate the material, as well as the container, the unconditional space -- and of course everyone else participates in that, too -- in addition to being receptive to the information coming from the students and coming from one's own free awareness. It's a more complicated dance...
